Maple Weekend began almost 15 years ago when Wyoming County maple producers opened their doors to the public to showcase the production of maple products from tree to table. The first event, known then as Maple Sunday, demonstrated how maple syrup was made by tapping trees, collecting sap and boiling it into syrup. Producers also provided samples and sold maple products to the public. Now Maple Weekend occurs statewide and the event has grown so much that the maple producers had to add a second weekend.

The Maple Festival celebrates an important aspect of Whitingham's economic and cultural heritage. Eight of our eighteen Whitingham sugar makers have graciously opened the doors of their sugar houses and given their time so that residents, visitors, and guests, alike will gain a better understanding and appreciation for the art and science of Maple syrup and sugar making and the historical importance of sugaring to our town. Whitingham is known as the birthplace of Brigham Young and there are two monuments in town noting Young's achievements. The town is located in southern Vermont, about 25 miles north of Greenfield, Massachusetts, and between Bennington and Brattleboro, Vermont. There are a number of bed and breakfasts and small inns in and around the town.

Early in January of 1942 it suggesting that the maples that line the streets of Nashville, Michigan be turned into a huge sugarbush as a community project. When the sap began to run that spring, the idea had become a reality. With the aid of some fifty or more boys and girls who washed buckets, tapped trees, collected sap and pasted labels about two hundred gallons of syrup were made that first season. On any given weekend when the sap is running and a big cloud of steam hangs low over the north side of town, the population is swelled by several hundred visitors who come to watch, taste and buy the golden syrup.
