I remember seeing maples when I visited Colonial Willaimsburg years ago. I wondered if anyone made syrup that far south. Good luck with your season, I hope you get a bunch of freeze/thaw cycles.

Please tell us more about how your collecting. Now if you have sap filling the buckets that should help weigh them down.

I'm using tubing tap with 5 gal bucket on the ground and it's on uneven terrain, the gust here are pretty bad. This was on one of the property the rest i did yesterday put longer hoses and made sure it was more secure on the ground.

I use bags where I can't set buckets, gives you more options

Sweetgum are you using 1 bucket for multiple taps if so centrally locate it and dig the bucket into the ground to level ground.

This project has been on a tight budget that i have been working on for 2 years. buckets have been free. thank you for the feed back. This is a trial year before i really sink some money in equipment. As far as I know, I'm the only person even trying to make syrup in Virginia Beach. Spending most of my time making my evaporator from scrap metal I've been salvaging. FYI even working with 14 ga stainless steel, it's a pin in the a$$ to work with to the point that I'm honestly buying my next pan. As soon as i figure out how to post pics from my mac i will show the custom stove and pan.
