Default Shurflo 12v 3/16ths # of taps?

I'm new to tubing systems and want to know what's a sappers standard for a 12v shurflo pump 3/16 tubing system. Any help would be great. Also I don't have a ton of slope pretty level here in eastern Wisconsin.

if you're flat then research is showing that 3/16 may not be your best option, rather you should consider 5/16 tubing lines.

I think you would get great results using a Shurflo on your relatively flat 3/16" line. How much drop do you have, just a few feet or nothing at all? I believe research shows that 3/16 lines aren't effective on a flat slope with gravity, however adding the pump should make a big difference. I just thinned out a stand of 20-30 red maples on a flat piece of land near a swamp which I am going to tap for the first time this spring, putting them on a Shurflo pump. Test results will be in by April!

I'm with Moser. Your 3/16 will fill with sap and the vacuum from the pump will not pass through the liquid to the tap hole, the place where you want your vacuum.

True that the 3/16 will fill with sap, but the 3/16 works different than the 5/16, it does not need to have unobstructed vacuum reaching the taphole like the 5/16 does. Adding vacuum to a 3/16 line works well.

How much drop do you have on the lines? Unless you have 5 or 6 feet of drop to create some natural vacuum, the research indicates you are better with 5/16.

I have had very good luck with 3/16 on level ground with a shurflo pump. On the lines that are level I lose about 1 or 2 inches of vac at the end of the line with around 25 taps. I like it because I do not have to worry about slope. You need to remember that this is with added vac and will not work on gravity alone.

Read the research and decide for yourself. Mother Nature will giveth but also will taketh.
