Default Squirrel damage to bags

For several years I've had damage to bags in one of three separate sugar bushes, I assumed it was from deer. This year it was exceptionally bad, I even put up a scarecrow which didn't help. We had a recent new snow and I could see squirrel tracks going from tree to tree. I put out a dozen steel traps yesterday with peanut butter on the trap pan and this morning found two with squirrels in them.

tack up a few bags here and there filled with a mixture of sap and habanero or ghost pepper. Just mark the bags really well you don't want to dump that into your collection tank he he Jay

At that rate Bob I think you'll run out of squirrels before you get the chance to try my idea ha ha. A friend takes red Christmas ornaments and as soon as they get their tomato cages set over the plants hangs them all over. the birds who like to peck at tomatoes come and peck at the ornaments get frustrated and once the real thing does ripen they don't bother. So if before tapping season if you would "spike" the area with hot pepper bags the little critters might decide not to chew anything blue once you really drive taps???? Maybe a windshield washer solvent mixture to keep it from freezing? Jay

I've caught 11 now, nothing this morning. The deer also like to lick peanut butter off the trap pans, I've surprised a few with evidence of deer hair left behind.

Default squirrel stew

Just a question for you - are you using blue bags or clear bags... I only ask because I have been doing this for 8 years and have never had a single "squirrel attack" on my bags. This is also the first year I have used blue bags.... 90 out of 100 the first time were chomped....25 the very next day....
Up until this year I was using clear bags but my supplier shipped me blue ones. I just wanted to see if there was any correlation between the color bags and the attraction for the tree rats.

Thanks

Default squirrels

We use blue bags, we also have neighbors, close by, that feed lots of deer and squirrels. So far we have no damage in 4 days, no squirrels in traps this morning either.
I mentioned this problem to another syrup maker this morning, he said they solved it by placing a sleeve made of aluminum window screen over the sacks.

Now if you caught a deer in your trap it'd be impressive.
