Default Ever check the pH of your permeate?

Checked mine last week; I had no idea what to expect but have read that normal groundwater runs between 6-8.5. I believe that permeate is generally higher; mine was running between 9-10.

OK now that you have that information what is your plan. I understand that information is King BUT what does it tell you. I might be simple minded but if I remove all the sugar and minerals out of the sap leaving behind permeate that has no sugars present isn't that what we want?

This wasn't even on my radar until just recently as I read a couple of threads pertaining to RO wash water and some of the regulations governing it in VT and NY. One of those threads linked to a set of instructions for neutralizing RO wash water put together by Tim Wilmot. In those instructions he mentions a pH of 6.5-9, "being safe for you and the environment."

The PH of permeate will change with very little added to it as it has no buffering. It will not take much to change it.

OK now I understand. So my idea of getting 10 free hot tubs off Craig's list and making them my permeate tanks and charging for a Spa treatment would still leave me with a butt load of water needing treatment before I dump it? Pun intended.

I did have a neighbor that was emptying their hot tub with a hose in the gutter and was sited for untreated wastewater dumping.

"A butt load of water need treatment?!" lol

As you update your business plan to incorporate the 10 new permeate tanks you'll have to compare the potential benefits of having 10 hot tubs with the costs for neutralizing the water before you dump it. In our you-pick blueberry operation we weigh customers before and after picking; perhaps you could do the same by checking the pH of the water before and after your "customers" get in and charge according to the change? In short order, you'll be able to write a book on how to tell who's peeing in your pool.

You'll want to charge the fat ones more as you're more likely to have spillage...

Something you can whisper into the ear of your hydrometer-babes, "You are my density."
