Default True RO Cost

so this again was brought up in a discussion the other day. now I have an idea since our operation purchased a RO within the last year, but I was hoping to hear from others before I put in my .02
so with no sugar coating or saying how great and life changing the RO purchase was lets tell people the TRUE cost to purchase, operate, clean, and store your RO's . Like I said I'll comment, but want to hear from others first

Default RO

Well it is the second best investment I ever made . First being a filter press, but as Jake stated the truth is they stink literally ,storage is a pain, sending the membranes to be professionally cleaned is expensive, the chemicals are hard to get shipped so you are at the mercy of your local dealer which very few STOCK items . My electric bill didn't double but almost , would I buy another one YOU BET ! Fuel is $ 4.00 a gallon so in the end 75 % less water = 75 % less fuel just one of the many things that we have to do. You know we are all making millions in this sugaring legacy we'll leave behind. My own 2 cents. Mike

Well I'm not smart enough to know how to figure out the electrical cost but I saw no noticeable rise in our bill. It has a 8amp draw on 220v and ran for a avg of 7 hours each day I cooked. New prefilter each day at $3, jar of soap that should last a few years $15. Haven't bought any acid or preservative yet as it was sent with a years supply. Made a membrane vessel for $20 to store it in. So to process 125gal/hr I would say I have very little cost involved.

Jeff,
You say you are not smart enough to figure the cost? Well, just in case you aren't just blowing smoke, and you really don't know how, here it is.
You buy electricity by the KiloWatt hour. That's one thousand watts.
Volts times amps (actual, not nameplate) equals watts. So:
220 times 8? equals 1760 watts. That's 1.76 KW
Look on your electric bill to see how much a KW hour costs. Likely around 12-15 cents. So, your 8 amp motor costs about +- 22-25 cents per hour to operate. Pretty cheap if you ask me.

Ours pulls 9 amps on 220 ..... Our cost was minimal really, a case of filters, and this season, that's about it. Had soap, and acid, didn't need more this year. I like it, I like it, I like it. Truly a time, wood, and money saver for us. Clean it ourselves, store it in place in storage solution.
BUT, we are small compared to some (most?). I see those with multiples of our only several hundred taps, and ROs to match. We couldn't even handle a 600 GPH RO right now. So, I figure their true cost could be also multiples higher. How much I dunno. If we keep growing as anticipated, we may get there... I'd like to hear from different of the "bigs" of their true cost for ROs.
take care, Mark

I have to look into where and how to get the soap and acid. It sounds like it may be a restricted item to ship. That could be a problem for me if that is the case. The nearest dealer is like 2 1/2 hr drive away.

Interesting Thread to follow seeing that I will have an RO for next season.

I bought a ten lb bag of citric acid on Amazon. Way cheaper than from a dealer. I would think the powdered soap could be shipped.

Other than the direct cost of the RO, I have another $50 in plumbing, plenty of tanks already on hand, no insulated room, the ro is carried into the house when it gets below freezing. So I guess in your way of looking at things you might as well add$140,000 to the cost to keep my RO warm since that's how much the house is going on the market for.
