Default Installing xle-4040 in canister

Just tried finishing my RO by installing the membrane in the canister. One end of the membrane has a black rubber gasket on it... the other end doesn't. I cannot get the membrane in the canister (even though I'm trying to force it) because with the rubber gasket on it won't slide in. Should this gasket be removed first? The membrane slides freely with the gasket removed but...

I assume the gasket has to be in place to stop the sap from leaking out the canister between the metal and the plastic cap, is that correct? And is there suppose to be a gasket on Each end?

Was hoping to get her up and running tomorrow before I bring more sap in. Not sure if this just put a damper in my plans.

Thanks!

The black gasket is what they call the u cup ,it must be in place when you install it in to the canister. It should be on the end that the raw sap is feed in. hope this helps. Good luck , you'll never boil raw sap again.

That's perfect. Food grade grease answered the question. I've been reading that manual but must have missed the grease part. It all seems to have fit together now. Guess we'll find out how she works! I'm more concerned with leaks out other end without the u cup.

Thanks for the help, both of you. Oh, and since I'm going to be doing a pre-season rinse Jake, do you have any permeate I can use? I'd rather not use pond water.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Glycerine is what you want to lube the o-ring with a light coating. 8 Oz container will last 10 lifetimes.

Food Grade Grease

Food grade silicone on RO??? Extractor=Yes. This is Corning 111

I read in the CDL Hobby RO maunual available online that the U cup is often upside down in a new membrane and has to be changed to the other way? Did you find this? I just installed mine and didn't do anything with the U cup. I just have it on the raw sap side. Did I do it correctly?

Think that the U cup brine seal is intended "seat" when pressure is applied at the input side of the membrane where the seal is. The seals are flared out, and they will seat against the cannister when pressure is applied.
Here is a picture that shows how they are oriented..
