Default Wiring my RO: Question about wire size

My 375 RO from Ray Gingerich runs off a Marathon 3hp electric motor (230 volts). I believe the motor is rated at 16.5 amps at 230 volts. It will have a dedicated breaker. My question is, can I get away with using 12/2 wire on a 20 amp double pole breaker (as opposed to 10/2 , 30 amp) since 12 ga nm wire is rated at 20 amps? The length of the run is about 15 feet. I would like to use the 12 ga/20 amp because I already have it.

30 amp breaker & #10 conductor. I would use no less.

15 FT of 10 gauge verses 12 is so minimal. I would not want to put my motor at risk under sizing wire regardless of the run.
