I have wondered myself because I'm planning on teaming up with a fellow SBI member and we want to set up a woods together and share the concentrate. Now If I had a friend that needed 600 gallons of sap concentrated and it was a 1 time event I would do it for a case of beer. Now would I do it for $20.00 the cost of a case of beer..............NO because its a one time event.

When I first toyed with the idea of an RO I kept hearing the high cost of power to run all the pumps and such. My whole season power bill was around $145.00 to produce 350 gallons of syrup so running 600 gallons was nothing.

Calculate the operators value of labor. I would estimate $20.00 per hour.
Take the cost of his equipment and amortize it over 12 years. This assumes that after 12 years the RO Value is $0.00
Times the percentage of sap you run through the RO.
$200.00 per year for membrane Service Per membrane.
Total cost of cleaning chemicals and pre filters and service calls if any.
Time the percentage of sap your run through the RO.
Tell me how big his RO and I will give you an Idea of his power usage. This is not a huge number.
Add 30% to 40% to your share of the costs and that would be fair.
And you may get close to an honest value of his services.

Pierre My premise was based on a one time event with a friend. Now you will be getting your own RO so you will have a different mind set. I also believe that anytime you make a business decision with anyone be it a friend or just the man off the street you had better make your FIRST deal the best deal because trying to change it after its been implemented its cause for hard feelings.

I would trade him some type of commodity that he doesn't have (but you do) along with a case of beer (if he drinks beer). I have laying hens, so I would give him a couple dozen eggs along with the alcohol.
