Default Ontario maple workshops

OMSPA Information Days are held each winter in many locations across Ontario wherever maple syrup is produced. Whether you are a hobbyist or a full time maple syrup producer, this is your opportunity to learn what's new in maple and to network with other avid producers who love to talk about the industry. There are expert speakers, maple equipment suppliers, and maple producer discussion panels. You do not need to be a member to attend the meetings but membership will guarantee that you get the latest in all things maple. Attend a meeting near you or attend several! Default Grey Bruce chapter

We attended the Grey Bruce session on Saturday and found it to be extremely informative. Highlights for us were: our introduction to the Growing Forward 2 grants; food safety (don't use steel wool to clean equipment - explained as not using steel wool is a preventative measure. A stiff bristled brush will do the same job and be much safer from a food safety perspective.); OMSPA research initiatives on mould and a maple syrup focus group through Wilfred Laurier University; and a chance to talk with vendors about their products. We also picked up 3000' of 3/16" tubing to see if we can avoid having to purchase a vacuum pump and releaser. Anyone who can is encouraged to attend future info days.

My understanding for the Growing Forward 2 is that it only applies to registered farms. Is that correct?

CDL, Lapierre, and L.S.Bilodeau all confirmed for Eastern
Ontario. Still waiting on Leader, D&G, Thor, & H20 to reply to my invitation.

Default Growing Forward 2

Growing Forward 2 was promoted by Paul Bailey from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. He stated that it was surprising how few maple producers had applied for the grant. I am still trying to decipher how we could benefit. Here is the eligibility information from the website:
Who is Eligible for the Capacity Building Funding Assistance?
Established and new Ontario farm businesses can apply for cost-share under the GF2 Capacity Building funding assistance program. The farm businesses must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Produce agricultural commodities in Ontario
• File business and/or farm income/loss taxes in Ontario
• Have a Premises Identification Number for the farm property where the proposed Capacity Building activity applies, and
• Have a valid Farm Business Registration Number (FBRN) or equivalent.
New producers that meet the following criteria are also eligible for GF2 Capacity Building funding assistance. New producers are those that:
• Are new entrants to the agricultural production industry and have business projections that demonstrate potential annual gross business income of $7,000 or more within three years of applying; and proof of ownership or control of productive agricultural assets to generate farm income
• File personal income taxes in Ontario
• Have not filed taxes as a farm business in the two years previous to applying for GF2 funding, and
• Have a Premises Identification Number for the farm property where the proposed Capacity Building activity applies
Farm businesses can also be members of a collaborative enterprise such as a corporation or partnership and apply under the organizations and collaborations stream of GF2.

Default What's on Tap?

This is a new publication by OMAF that I picked up at the info day as well. It is aimed at Ontario's non-federally registered maple producers "to help improve their production practices, understand and meet regulatory requirements, and apply for Growing Forward 2 shared funding. This first issue has articles on lead, density measurement, etc.

What's on Tap?
