Default Who's getting ready for 2019?

I hope this year is better than last year. I tapped last year on Jan. 4.

I am in Athens county. I had about 50 taps on 3/16 and made 14 gallons syrup last year. That was my second year. I am going to run the same amount of taps this year. The sugar content hasn't been that great the past couple years. I hope it is better this year.

So I tapped 50 trees on 3/16 line today. Some trees started to run once I pulled the drill bit out. Sugar season of 2019 has started!

So for my part of the Great State of Ohio, the forecast is all below freezing after Tuesday the ,8th for about a week. Several of us in the area plan to start tapping in about a week. I have really grown to prefer tapping when frozen if possible. Still alot of loose ends to tie up around my sugar House.

What are the benefits to tapping when frozen?

For me a few, it seems the bit drills & cleans out easier when frozen. I tap about 75% red maples & when drilling them when it's warm ,the bit tends to screw itself in, rather then cutting, on many soft maples .Then the other part is ,I struggle to keep up with all that's happening around my place, so if it's warm, I am getting sap. When the sap is running, that keeps me busy & makes it hard to spend long times just tapping. So to put in a good day tapping, it's best for me if sap's not flowing. But in this business, we rarely get the exact weather we want.

Im new to this sight but I have 24 taps out, nothing from my reds but sugars and silvers have been running at 2 and 1.6% have made 3 quarts of syrup since Christmas and have 15 gallons of sap to take care of. Looks like this deep freeze that we are about to have for the nest week or so will slow down things for me here but looks like it may be time to put in the rest of my taps after that.
