Default Driveway Alarms

With a rash of B&E's in my area lately I would like to purchase a driveway alarm for my farm. Does any one here have experience with driveway alarms? I looked online and was overwhelmed with all of the brands. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Do you have a budget in mind? Do you have a smart phone?

I have had several issues involving trespassing at our farm parcel which is located about 100 yards from our home. Unfortunately, we are unable to see the entrance from our location. I have tried several methods and will give you a brief impression of each.

Driveway alarm: I bought one from a Michigan company after seeing some positive reviews on another forum I frequent. It works but in my case, only sporadically. It would detect a vehicle driving about half the time but the results diminished as distance was increased. The other main drawback of a system like this is that you must be present in order to hear the alarm. If you step out of the house or your wife yells at you momentarily (maybe I'm the only one whose wife yells at him? ) you will miss it. Couple that with the intermittent success and I took mine back.

Trail camera: I've had several brands and am happy to expand upon this if you'd like to read more but the bottom line is this: Do you wish to have instant notification of someone trespassing or are you ok with a delay? All of my cameras will record a picture and video but I have to go out to retrieve the memory cards in order to see what HAS BEEN happening. An alternative to this (not the only one) is a wireless camera that can send you pictures via text message or e-mail. Prices have come down on both the hardware and the data packages for these cameras over the past few years. A bit more of a drop and I will buy one.

Long range wifi: I understand that this option may be done for under $1000 but I haven't looked into it as deeply yet. Cost is the primary negative but on the positive side you can get a much higher quality picture (or video) and a lower operating cost. Check out buckeye camera system and understand how it works. Once you get it, you can build your own.

Hope this helps. I hate trespassers. All thieves started out as trespassers.

You may find something in game cams with wifi. When triggered they will send a alert or pic to your phone or computer.

My issue is I have 4 driveways to cover. One at my sugarhouse, two for my house and garage, and one for my farm outbuildings. Two much area for one trail cam to cover, it would take a least three to do what I want to do. Besides I like the idea of having the opportunity of catching the thieves in the act rather than having pictures of them after my stuff is gone. What I don't want is to get woken up 50 times a night by false alarms. That's what concerns me with the driveway alarms.

Find one that activates only when metal passes by.

I bought and have been using a Bushnell Aggressor Wireless camera for the last week. It's a high definition camera with no glow infrared leds, so they have no clue it just took a picture. When I first bought it I was playing around with it to see how fast it would send pictures. I was amazed to find it was almost instantaneous, within 10 seconds. And I have really poor cell signal where I live. So I would think where you are it would work great. Best of both, you get a picture and the joy of being able to confront them.
