Default Ran into these guys this past weekend

Found this wild hive of honeybees earlier in the season when we were tapping. Happy to see they survived the winter and were out and about this past weekend.

Coincidentally, I got my first hive at home this Friday. Nothing like taking care of 6,000 pets!

As usual darn upload is not working again for pics. but I have about 130 colonies of Nucs going at this time and will keep splitting off and send some down the road. Went in HOT the other day and got caught. No head net on opening entrances after I delivered 3 colonies to a guy a few came right out and zinged me 2x on the left eyelid. Standing to the side of entrances they find you fast.

I probably have about 2.5+ million pets right now RHale

Looks like fun, Kevin. We have 12 hives at this point (lost three this winter) and will be making splits over the next month - or as soon as we can get queens. Hoping to make a dozen nucs for winter this year along with 18 or so hives. Don't want to get too big.

Guess you can say we're sweet people. Sticky too!

I think I'll just stick to one hive for my first go around! I will say though I'm finding this to be a new obsession. I checked them yesterday and the queen was released and they went through 2 quarts of syrup. Seem to be happy bees so far.

and your eye - ouch. I don't mind working the bees, but I'm not comfortable enough without suiting up. In time though!

Congrats on getting your first colony established. We lost two of the three hives this winter. Will be looking for swarms this summer.

Kevin,
The eye looks tender. That's a lot of nucs! How many colonies do you have?
Regards,
Chris

Somewhere around 160+ including the nucs we been making up=lots of splits happening/2 frames of brood and about 3-4 frames wide of bees to cover. Been feeding pollen and syrup to them daily. Some nucs have been eating a grill burger size pollen patty about every 3 days. Only thing out here is silver maple buds. no red maple that I see yet.

Hope to maybe bring everything south for the winter so I can sit on the beach sipping rum and coke all winter while you guys stay in the cold during the winter . Will be making up more nucs and get back into raising my own queens this summer after a few year lay off of that. Working on building up enough equipment to have 300 queen nucs going. I have enough equipment left over from before to get 50 going at this time. my Original queen Mating Nucs are 1/2 a Medium frame 3 to a box/but will be going 1/2 a Deep and 5 wide.
