Default Birch Trees

Ok since it is way to cold right now to do anything with maple syrup my mind starts working on other things and one thing that hit me today was tapping birch trees to make birch syrup.

My question is I wonder if cutting young birch trees like the test that Dr. Perkins did with maple trees would work the same for birch?

I do not have any where enough good size birch trees to tap but in a power line right a way I am always cutting back birch saplings.
Well heck that got me thinking that if it would work for maple saplings why would it not work for birch saplings. I could keep them in a young state by topping the each year and make some birch syrup.

What do you think? I just hope that some day soon that they bring to market those caps for tapping trees in this manner.

Be careful with the whole birch thing. One of my mainlines runs through a pure birch stand with about 200 trees. I mentioned to my wife that we should tap them this year and try it out. If she had a gun, I think she'd have shot me! No sense of adventure I guess.

I'm not real sure, but i don't think the birch regenerate more sprouts as prolifically as maple? That's part of the reason it works well, especially soft maples.

Who ever can tell me what the orange tape means on the buckets in the pics gets a ticket to the Annual raffle. I may up this to 2 tickets in a few days because I almost know I have not mentioned anything to anyone.

Only 1 guess per person per 24 hours=So if you guess today at 945 you cannot post another guess until the following day at 945 to give everyone that wants to guess an fair shot at the ticket(s).

Every time you empty a bucket you reverse it on the tree so you know its been dumped.

Chris I have tried some, One time that I was up that way I stopped by Gary R's place to visit and he let me try some. That was some of the strangest stuff I have tried.
I have read a little more about making birch syrup and one thing that can make it taste weird is cooking to long and to hot, an RO is an almost giving to make a fairly good tasting birch syrup.

I also like to try different things and if I could make some right at the end of the maple season it would save me having to clean pans a second time.

I really wish I could make walnut syrup but I have no idea where to find a stand of walnut trees around here to make it worth my time.
