Default crazy 2016

Our sap started running very very early in north central MN - Cushing area. Due to extremely warm conditions we actually tapped on 2/26 and sap was already running in some trees. Last Saturday, had about 35 gallons of sap in containers, but then it all died down during the week. Looking at the forecast appears we may have about 4-5 days of prime weather and then it appears to be getting way to warm. This is a month early. Hope I am wrong!

Same here in Buffalo, MN. We tapped 2/27/16 and collected 114 gallons last Saturday and basically nothing since. We will collect today and cook and then might have to wait out the warm spell.

Default Finally getting sap up here

Finally getting some sap flow (finally? this is a week or two before normal - but have been reading about others getting sap) 35 gallons yesterday, 70 gallons today from 150 taps..... I had to back off on my number of taps this year as my assistant sapper (my wife) is working afternoon shifts now. Looks like it is going to stay above freezing at night for the next 5 or six days - then hopefully back to cycling.

Default Swimming in sap

The trees have finally let loose here, I only put in 150 taps this year and I am getting 125-150 gallons of sap a day (all on bags). My weather looks perfect for the next 10 days or so. Sugar started at about 1% but yesterday was almost 3%! My wife is cranking out the maple butter and I am trying to find the time to fill the maple sugar orders Just hope the weatherman is right for a change and I can get all my product in the next 7-10 days

Default 2016, our best year ever

What we thought was going to be a bust season, turned out to be our best year ever ending with 33 gallons of finished product. Mother Nature is in charge when it comes to maple syrup!

Default 2016 season

This year started off to be a dismal year. Too warm- staying warm, to cold- staying cold. Things finally took a turn for the good. 150-200 gallon sap days for 2-3 weeks made for my best year ever. 2000 gallons sap and 45-50 gallons syrup! Not complaining at all! I could have gone a couple days longer but the trees started to swell (buds). I pulled the taps 4/10/16. I had 90 taps total this year and am very happy with my total. All medium Amber! Plans to upgrade are already in the works!!!!

50 gallons of syrup on 100 taps? I have very sweet trees but didn't achieve those numbers with twice the taps. If that is correct I am envious.

I actually had 90 taps out. When the sap was running good I could empty bags twice a day. Full to overflowing! My sap was at 4% all year. I write down every gallon that goes in my bulk tank and I had 1985 gallons this year. Factoring 40-1 ratio I am right on the mark.

Actually, unless I'm missing something , the math works out to be:

1985 gal of sap (or 22.05 gal sap/tap)

Rule of 86
86 divided by 4% = 21.5-1=20.5 gal sap to make 1 gal syrup

Total 1985 gal of sap divided by 20.5 gal sap/gal syrup = 96.8 gal syrup
