I guess I don't know what the rule of 86 is so I used the math that I know and divided 1985 x 40 and came up with 49.6 gallons.

The 40 to 1 ratio is only for sap at 2.15% sugar. For any other sugar concentration you need to divide 86 (now updated to 87) by the sugar % in the sap.
As Dr. Tim says, you divide your sugar % into 86 (newly corrected to 87) to see how many gal of sap it takes to make 1 gal of syrup of the proper density. If you have 2% sap, it takes 43.5 gal of sap to make 1 gal of syrup (you need to remove 42.5 gal of water). If you have 4% sap, 87/4=21.75 or for every 21.75 gal of 4% sap, you remove 20.75 gal of water to have 1 gal of syrup left.
If you got 49.6 gal of syrup from 1985 gal of sap, you had a ratio of 40.02 gal of sap for each gal of syrup. 87/40.02=2.17% sugar in sap, not 4% average for year.

Just to clear things a it, I also make boxelder syrup and that was included in the totals. That sap was at 1%. 500 gallons<>. I also don't wring every drop out of my pans. When I have enough, I'm done. Chase alittle out of the syrup pan with water and call it good.
