Default 2014 spring

We opened the road to the sugar shack last week-end. Five hours and then we decided to wait till this week-end to see how much the snow settles.
Putting in 700 taps this week-end. We will be ready. Have not set up the new RO yet though.

Default Too much snow

Put out 10 test taps Monday. All dry, thankfully. We have so much snow that the woods are impassible. I have been snowshoeing my trails, but once it started to thaw they got real soft again. Today is a little colder so I am going to go out and see if I can get the snowmobile stuck. I am not too concerned with tapping on snowshoes, but collecting is gonna be tough.
Woodsman, it looks like you are expanding big time. 700 taps with an RO this year? How many have you got on tubing now?
Good luck and good boiling,
Leo

Still about the same on vacuum and gravity. added about 200 more bags for a total of around 500 with a couple hundred on gravity and vacuum. I have teamed up with a local buddy. Working together we figured we could get more syrup than alone. He is my age and retired so he will be able to fill in and collect when I am not there.
Hopefully the snow is down enough i can rerun my old ATV trails I made in December as I could see their faint outlines last week-end before the melt. We are tapping together this week-end.
Otherwise collecting bags will not go well until we can get through.
Can only do what the snow allows us.

Default Dripping

I tapped 50 on snowshoes today, about 7 were dripping pretty good. I am going to have to rig my small collection tank into the snowmobile sled; can't get the wheeler through the woods yet.

Tapped a box elder yesterday just to see. Sap came out before I got the bit out. Next 4, nothing. Trees are just waking up here.

A nice balmy 8 below zero this morning .... maybe 2 days above freezing in the next 10 days. Not tapping until next weekend at the very earliest. Took the 4 wheeler out on the sap trails - that lasted about 30 seconds followed by 10 minutes of winching the thing back out. I hope the sun settles some of the snow this week - snowshoes are standing by but that gets old fast!

We have about 160 taps in and little sap to show for it yet. We did have one tree that ran well out of all those. This upcoming week looks pretty good.
