Default Setting up my new 2x5

Getting my new 2x5 Smokey Lake evaporator set up. It is insulated and bricked, next up sometime this fall is a test boil. It is so beautiful I I almost hate to get it dirty :) But first I have to knock down several bees nests in the cupola on some nice frosty morning....

Very cool and I am sure you will be very pleased. Worst part is always peeling all the plastic off.

Thanks, can't wait to set up the test boil.

You want bees - this lovely nest below is about 100 yards away from the sugarhouse, taken a week or two ago. And found a ground nest of bees right in front of the sugarhouse that I almost stepped in. I get bad reactions to certain bee stings so I am happy to eliminate their nests!

That looks more like a white faced hornet nest (also called a bald faced hornet). That's not bees.

I just picked up my Smokey Lake 2x4 evaporator. It sitting in my barn waiting for me. I picked up a load of wood today so that needs my attention also. I'm waiting for my new shed to be finished so I can move all my tools into my new shop. Then I can set up my sugar shack.

Be careful, hornets can be very agressive and if I'm right about that being bald faced hornets they are some of the most agressive. The good news is that a good hard frost and the nest will die, only the queen and the encapsulated young over winter and neither sting.

That nest is a work of art. After frost I have harvested them and hung them in the barn for decoration. These nests are a one shot deal, meaning they won’t habitat them again next year.
