| | Moving along
Well sat brought a day of heavy rains. Spent the day high and dry in the sugar house organizing and cleaning up from the summer. My shack serves a dual purpose. Yesterday when the rains lifted I spent a few hours checking lines. Cut off three dead large branches on my lats. I start lowering my lats. Last year I was tapping above my head when I really didn't have to given the slope I have. Still have some to lower but will get to them this weekend. I have allot more squirrel damage than I anticipates. Good thing I have fittings, extra tubing and even drops made up.

| | Reboot?!?
Why is it that you have to keep clicking "Okay" to reboot while installing software? Why doesn't it just reboot on it's own? If you are installing a new program it's pretty safe to assume you aren't working on your thesis for med school at the same time. I wonder if we'll start seeing ad space for sale during the install process given that software companies seem to make you sit there watching a progress indicator just in case a reboot prompt comes along. You know how that works right? If you start the install then go for coffee the reboot is right at the beginning so nothing is done when you get back. If you wait the reboot is right at the end so you could have gone for coffee and not wasted your time.

What a crazy 2 weeks this has been, Ive been so anxious to get the new evaporator and to add the additional taps it seems like sometimes I spin out of control trying to get everything done at once. I finally just took a breath and started to tackle one project at a time . I ran 800 ft of new mainline and was working on finishing that up so I could do the laterals and my mother got sick and went in the hospital. Well that was on the 26th of December and she never came home .she passed away on the 29th 2 days before her 70th birthday. It was rough but she would want me to keep plugging along, she asked me why I was at the hospital with her when she knew that I had lines to run, always a Mom, I miss her and will always love her. So I got back to business here ,and I made a few phone calls to D&G and checked on my pickup date of 1 /17 for the new 3x10 it had moved back 10 days to the 27th but that's ok. I ordered the blanket for the arch and it seemed like I had everything in control... [Read More]

| | Walkin the woods
Walked all of my lines today. Found some squirrel damage that will need some attention. Have a few smallish trees that came down on some last that will need to be cut off. Many f my side ties which are made of bailing twine need to be replaced as expected. Will have to tighten up all the lats. Was a nice walk in the woods with the snowshoes on and the dog running up ahead. Took a quick inventory of the fittings that I have. Will need to get some more stubbies and cv's. Being in the woods today really got me excites about the coming season!

Well ,seems like noone submits to there journals anymore ,including myself so here goes. Its been a crazy busy year so far ,the berry season was off the hook ,we sold out all summer. It was good enough that we bought more land and added more berry plants . Then I started looking for a bigger evaporator ,I was going to go RO but we don't that kind of power supply yet ,so spent many nights and days searching for a good used evap. They just weren't there ,the ones that were, were way to big for our building ,h I had a line on a couple and deer season got in the way and I missed the sales. Well I started looking at new ones and I got a heck of a deal at D&G ,a 3x10 will be ready for pickup on 1/17/14 .Cutting it a little close ,but we will be fine ,Ive been cutting a lot of extra wood and Im running extra mains tomorrow. Im hoping to add about 250 to what I have now. WEll take care all and Ill add pictures when we take delivery. Take care all and God Bless ,Al

| | Starting over
Starting the process of pretty much replacing our small maple business. Plan on changing out our 2x5 arch with a 3x10 along with building a 16x30+ building. Still need to run all the numbers to see if it will ever pay for itself but we'll see. Keep ya posted...

Well its been a great year, so far weve surpassed last year with 35 gallons so far ,compared to 28 for last. Its been really busy this week ,we have gone through a ton of firewood ,actually I was getting a little nervous about running out of wood .Then we got a huge blessing ,my friend Jiem shows up with his son Ira and a trailer load of huge 2 yr old pine logs and his dump truck full as well,Thanks alot Jiem, then he breaks out the chainsaw and starts cutting as Im boiling what a huge help.We had an awesome turnout for the open house on Saturday and even more people showed up on Sunday,it was great overall. We got low on wood because I got a little over ambitious with my drill and tapped another 40 plus trees on 1 of the slow days and added it into the mainline.Next time Ill have to plan a little better, none the less we are having a blast ,Ive got a college Bio class tomorrow on a tour and maybe a couple of preschool classes as well.So heres what I have been doing at Lakeview Maple... | | Taps
Yesterday was a beautiful day. Temps in the low 50's; T shirt weather. Have a total of 11 of 12 taps in. Trees in the sun were running at a good rate. Taste test- very sweet. My nephew keeps finding more trees to tap. may have to borrow another dozen buckets. Weather looks good to the first part of the week, then rain and more cold weather to round out the week. Mother nature messin with me.

| | Plan for the weekend
Get off work in an hour, grab a short nap, then put in the remainder of the taps. Temps forcast to be in the upper 40's lower 50's in to the first part of the week. Hope to boil by the middle of the week. Keeping finger crossed. Garage all set up to boil, so bring on the sap.

Was down to 14 degrees last night and just didnt get warm enough to break things loose. We will see what the next couple of days bring

| | Decisions, decisions
Warm(er) temps never showed up. But the snow did. Supposed to get warmer this weekend. Now the dilema, put in taps or watch the 500. Why can't life be simple?:wonder:

| | I am ready
Got all the tanks cleaned today.. I am ready to tap next weekend on the 23rd. No matter the weather forcast, that is the day that I am tapping! Boiled with a buddy that had about 450 gallons of sap last night. HE has vac and is just enough south of me that it ran well for him over 2.5 days. I figure that if he only got 450 gallons with vac and taps 900 taps that my 200 taps on gravity wouldnt produce much so I am holding off for another week. I am ready for the season to begin and to find out what a normal season has in store for me since my first season was last season and i only got 6 boils in and was done in mid March.

| | 2013 all in
I put in all of them today 385 ,and a few buckets the Old Goat likes to hang up,The sap was running hard and had a nice steady stream coming off the mtn.I hooked up the sap Guzzler and left it running at the sugarbush behind the barn. There is about 150 taps there and I watched it for a while not knowing what to expect never having used any kind of vac before. It seemed to work pretty good ,I could see the sap moving in the lines,so I went to the sugarhouse and started tapping there, finished it all off and came home with high expectations.I was kinda disappointed, there was about 60 gallons in the tank but not much of a stream coming out of the pump.I took it off for the night and hooked a line into the tank.I took it apart when I got home and there was a piece on black plastic mainline stuck in the flapper ,not letting it seal so it lost vac.I will need to install an inline screen for tomorrow .Great day otherwise looks like I might be sweetening the pans on Friday,YEEHAA the season is...
